Let’s be honest: Samsung’s Ultra phones have been getting incrementally better for a few years now, and at some point “incremental” stops being interesting. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is not that phone.
This is a genuine leap — and the 200MP camera is only part of the story.
The Camera: 200MP Done Right
Samsung has had 200MP sensors before, but earlier implementations often felt like a spec-sheet exercise. More megapixels, more noise, more disappointment in anything other than perfect lighting.
The S26 Ultra is different. Samsung has reworked its pixel-binning algorithm significantly — in good light, the full 200MP mode produces images with a level of detail that you genuinely have to zoom into to appreciate. In low light, it switches intelligently to binned output, and the results are consistently excellent rather than occasionally excellent.
The 10x optical zoom is the other standout. Shooting at 100x still looks gimmicky, but the 10x-30x range is genuinely useful — probably the most useful zoom range Samsung has shipped on any phone.
The AI Features: More Useful Than They Sound
Samsung has leaned heavily on AI in the S26 Ultra, and unlike previous generations where AI felt like a checkbox, several of these features are legitimately useful in daily use.
Live Translate has improved dramatically — real-time translation of conversations, including in noisy environments, works well enough that you’d actually use it when traveling. AI-assisted editing in the gallery has gotten smarter about what looks natural versus what looks processed.
Generative Edit — which lets you remove objects, extend backgrounds, and fill gaps with AI-generated content — is still the most impressive party trick, but it’s also the most variable in quality. Sometimes the results are seamless. Sometimes they’re obviously artificial. Knowing when to use it takes some experience.
Performance: Not a Conversation Any More
The Snapdragon 8 Elite variant (in India) is fast. Very fast. But so was last year’s chip. At this point, the performance difference between flagship Android chips is invisible in real-world use, and anyone buying an S26 Ultra because they were worried about processing speed is solving a problem they didn’t have.
Battery life is genuinely improved — a full day of heavy use, including extended camera sessions and video streaming, ended with 20-25% remaining in our testing. That’s a meaningful improvement over the S25 Ultra.
The Display
6.9 inches, 3088×1440, 120Hz adaptive. It’s the best display Samsung has ever put on a phone, which means it’s probably the best display on any phone. Reading in direct sunlight, watching HDR content, using it as a viewfinder for the camera — all of it looks extraordinary.
Should You Buy It?
If you’re on an S23 Ultra or older, the answer is almost certainly yes. The camera improvements alone justify the upgrade.
If you’re on an S25 Ultra, it’s harder to justify unless you’re a serious mobile photographer who will actually use the 200MP mode regularly.
If you’re switching from another Android flagship or from an iPhone — the S26 Ultra is the strongest case Samsung has ever made for why you should make the switch.
Starting price in India: ₹1,29,999. Premium, but not unreasonable for what you get.
