The Cockroach Janta Party’s X account is now withheld in India. The notification that users inside the country receive when they try to access it says the account has been withheld “in response to a legal demand.”

X (formerly Twitter) withholds accounts in specific countries when it receives a legally valid government request — typically under local law — that it determines it must comply with to continue operating in that jurisdiction. The company’s own transparency reports document these actions.

What “Withheld in India” Means Technically

The account is not deleted. Users outside India can still access it. Indian users who use VPNs can access it. What the withholding does is make the account invisible to standard access from Indian IP addresses.

X’s policy is to notify the affected account holder when it receives a legally binding request, and to post the withholding notice publicly. The platform typically cites “legal demand” without specifying the exact nature of the order — though in India, this typically falls under Information Technology Act provisions or court orders.

Why the CJP’s X Account?

The CJP has not publicly confirmed receiving any formal communication about the legal basis for the withholding. Abhijeet Dipke, the party’s founder, posted about the withholding from an alternative account, describing it as “the most CJP thing that has ever happened to us.”

The content on the CJP’s X account has been broadly satirical — targeted at political figures across the spectrum, but with particular focus on the ruling establishment. The account had been gaining follower momentum in the weeks before the withholding, following increased coverage of Dipke’s assault in Jaipur.

The Transparency Question

When the government issues orders for content or account takedowns under IT Act provisions, there is no automatic requirement for public disclosure of the specifics. The affected party can challenge the order in court — a process that is available but often slow and expensive.
