Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Chennai Super Kings by 43 runs at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday in a match that extended RCB’s lead at the top of the IPL 2026 points table and deepened CSK’s miserable run of form in what had been expected to be a strong year for the yellow brigade.
The final score: RCB 198/4 in 20 overs; CSK 155/8 in 20 overs.
How RCB Got to 198
Virat Kohli’s 67 off 45 balls set the platform — a typically composed innings that mixed the singles and twos that protect the wicket with moments of controlled aggression. The innings built beautifully into Glenn Maxwell’s arrival in the 14th over, at which point the match’s scoring tempo changed significantly. Maxwell’s 54 off 22 balls took RCB from a solid 130-something to the 190s, and included a sequence of hitting that the Chinnaswamy crowd will be discussing for a while.
CSK’s Chase
The yellow innings was undermined by a top-order collapse that is becoming a pattern this season. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway are both talented players who are not finding their rhythm simultaneously. When both fail in the same match, CSK needs someone in the middle order to absorb the damage, and in this match, that rescue didn’t come until the runs required were beyond the available deliveries.
MS Dhoni, who now bats at 7 or 8 and is primarily there for the finishing role rather than prolonged innings, is not the person you build a chase around when you’re 60/4 in the 8th over.
What This Means for the Tournament
RCB at the top of the table in late-stage IPL is territory they’ve visited before and then left. Whether this year’s squad has the consistency to hold that position through the knockouts is the season-defining question.
