Budget 2026 calculator reveals if you will be better or worse off after John Healey statement

Your wallet is about to get a shock, and you can see exactly what it looks like right now. Ten million pounds isn’t much money in a national budget, but for a family stuck in a council tax band D flat, it’s the difference between paying the gas bill or the food shop. The government has announced a one-off £100 payment for 20 million households living in properties from band A to D, cash that lands directly in your bank account starting in January. It’s a blunt instrument, designed to keep the lights on while the broader economic storm rages outside. Fuel duty has also been frozen, which means the price at the pump won’t jump up by a few pence per litre just because the Treasury felt like it.

The £100 Energy Payment and the Freeze on Fuel Duty

Drivers are relieved, but only slightly, because the underlying cost of crude oil is dictated by forces no Chancellor can control. John Healey told MPs the UK was being battered by a global economic storm, a phrase that sounds poetic in the darkened chamber of the House of Commons but feels very real when you’re filling up a tank. He said, “Those are the storms we face. We can’t wish them away.

We must choose the course we steer through them.” The sentiment was earnest enough, and the rear view mirror of the car stopped by the parliamentary barriers was reflecting the gray sky perfectly. That’s a harder sell than it sounds, telling people their pain is temporary while the relief is a rounded hundred quid.

Fiscal Drag: The Silent Tax Hike Hiding in Plain Sight

The personal allowance stays put at £12,570, which means the government is not giving you a tax cut, it is quietly taking one. This is known as fiscal drag, a term used by economists to describe the process where inflation pushes your salary up while the threshold at which you start paying income tax remains frozen in time. If your pay rises by 3% and the threshold doesn’t move, you are effectively paying more tax than you did last year. It is a mechanism that works so smoothly behind the scenes that very few voters notice until their take-home pay shrinks despite a raise.

Reports had suggested the government might raise the allowance to £15,570, a figure that would have provided genuine breathing room for middle earners. Instead, the 20% tax bracket remains fixed between £12,570 and £50,270, with the 40% rate kicking in for earnings above that line up to £125,140. You pay 45% on anything over that final threshold, a rate that applies to a shrinking group of high earners but is still a heavy burden. Nobody in the room looked convinced that freezing thresholds while costs soar is a long-term strategy. It’s a stopgap, a financial tourniquet that tightens every year without the patient even realizing the pressure is increasing.

Minimum Wage Rise Meets the Hard Reality of Tax Brackets

The minimum wage is going up by 3.9%, which is a solid number on paper for the 2.3 million workers who rely on it for their living. For those aged 21 and over, the rate jumps from £12.71 to £13.21 an hour, while the 18-20 age bracket sees an increase from £10.85 to £11.27. It is a step in the right direction, an attempt to keep wage growth running ahead of inflation for the lowest-paid employees in the country. However, the catch is substantial and widely ignored in the press releases.

Because the tax thresholds are frozen, a chunk of that new pay will be eaten up by income tax, leaving the real-terms gain much smaller than the headline figure suggests. If you earn just above the personal allowance limit, your entire rise might go straight to HMRC, leaving your actual disposable income unchanged. This is the classic trap of fiscal drag hitting the bottom of the pay scale hardest, where there is the least cushion to absorb the shock. It’s a policy contradiction that feels almost clumsy in its execution, promising more money while structurally ensuring you keep less of it. The math doesn’t quite work out for the people it is supposed to be helping the most.

Pensions, Savers, and the New Rules for Bigger Returns

The state pension rises to £13,036 a year from next April, protected by the triple lock that has become the bedrock of the government’s social policy. This pushes the basic state pension over the £12,570 personal allowance for the first time, a technicality that could have meant pensioners suddenly had to pay income tax on their life’s savings. But the government has confirmed that anyone claiming just the state pension will not have to pay tax, a relief that has been well received by campaigners. They will do this by increasing the personal allowance for low-income pensioners to match the new pension figure, meaning the tax-free limit rises in tandem with your income.

For savers, the news is mixed, with the Chancellor scrapping a planned cut to the cash ISA allowance which had been due to drop from £20,000 to £12,000. However, the tax on savings interest is going up from next year, rising to 24% for basic rate taxpayers from April 2027, a jump from the scheduled 22%. Higher rate taxpayers face a 44% tax on savings interest, and additional rate movers will see a 49% charge. It is a signal that the era of zero interest rates is firmly behind us and that the state intends to share in the fruits of higher yields.

And let’s be honest, if you are sitting on a pile of cash in the bank, you were enjoying that yield, but now the state wants its cut, and it’s a bigger cut than anyone predicted. This is not a time to be complacent about where your money is parked, as the rules are changing under your feet.

First-Time Buyers Face a Riskier Gambling Environment

The government has launched a new scheme called Your First Home, which requires buyers to have a deposit of just 2.5% of the property value. The state provides an equity loan worth 20% of the property value, reducing the amount of cash the buyer needs to up front. Experts have warned that there is a risk of negative equity, a scenario where the amount you owe on your mortgage is greater than the current market value of your house. If the price falls, you are in debt, and the state holds a piece of the pie, which complicates any future sale or refinancing.

The lifetime ISA penalty is being reduced from 25% to 20%, which is a small but welcome change for those who get stuck or desperate. At the moment, you lose part of your savings if you use the Lifetime ISA for anything other than your first home or retirement, a rule that has caught out many young savers. A new First Time Buyer ISA is planned for April 2029, replacing the Lifetime ISA, with the bonus only paid out on completion of a property. This change means you will get back roughly what you have saved, plus interest, though not your government bonus, if you pull out early. It’s a step toward flexibility, but the core structure remains punitive, sending a clear message that the government wants you to buy a house, not save for a holiday.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Who gets the £100 energy payment?

The payment is for households in council tax bands A to D, which covers 20 million properties. It will be paid directly into your bank account starting in January. Single people and couples living together will both receive the payment if they live in an eligible band.

Will my state pension be taxed?

No, if you are only claiming the basic state pension, you will not pay income tax on it. The government has raised the personal allowance for low-income pensioners to £13,036 to match the new pension rate. However, if you have private pensions or have deferred your claim, you may still be liable for tax.

What happens to my cash ISA?

The annual allowance remains at £20,000, as the planned cut to £12,000 has been scrapped. However, the tax rate on savings interest outside of ISAs is rising to 24% for basic rate taxpayers from April 2027. The rise is 3.9%, but because tax thresholds are frozen, some of this gain will be offset by income tax. The real-terms increase will likely be lower than the headline figure for those earning above the personal allowance.

Is the minimum wage rise real cash in hand?
