Sunrisers Hyderabad to write to BCCI over controversial calls in IPL 2026, Avesh Khan incident latest flashpoint: Report

Sunrisers Hyderabad to Approach BCCI Over IPL 2026 Controversies

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are reportedly preparing to raise concerns with the Board of Control for Cricket in India following a series of controversial umpiring decisions in IPL 2026. The latest flashpoint emerged during their clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), intensifying frustration within the franchise.

    Avesh Khan Incident Sparks Debate

The controversy centers around LSG pacer Avesh Khan during the final moments of the match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Chasing a target of 157, LSG secured a five-wicket victory with just one ball remaining under the leadership of Rishabh Pant. The decisive moment came when Pant struck a boundary off Jaydev Unadkat.

However, immediately after the shot, Avesh Khan—standing near the dugout—was seen hitting the ball back into the field before it clearly reached the boundary cushion. This action triggered widespread debate among fans and experts.

Calls for Penalty Runs and Rule Violations

According to reports and social media discussions, many believe SRH should have been awarded five penalty runs under cricket laws:

    • Law 20.1 (Dead Ball)
    • Law 41 (Unfair Play)

Critics argued that touching the ball before it crosses the boundary could be deemed interference.

However, experts suggest that the act may not qualify as deliberate unfair play, primarily because no fielders were in a position to stop the boundary. As a result, match officials had limited grounds to impose penalties.

SRH’s Growing Frustration Over Multiple Decisions

The Avesh Khan episode is not an isolated concern. Reports indicate that Sunrisers Hyderabad are unhappy with several earlier decisions in IPL 2026:

    • The dismissal of Heinrich Klaasen against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), where he was caught by Phil Salt off Romario Shepherd
    • The controversial dismissal of Abhishek Sharma against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 2
    • Questions over Varun Chakravarthy’s catch at deep square leg off Blessing Muzarabani

Abhishek Sharma had also shown dissent following his dismissal, which led to a penalty under the IPL Code of Conduct.

No Match Results to Change, But Complaint Likely

While none of these decisions or match outcomes will be overturned, SRH are reportedly considering formally writing to the BCCI to express their concerns and seek greater consistency in officiating.

The move highlights growing tension around umpiring standards in IPL 2026.

SRH’s IPL 2026 Performance So Far

Sunrisers Hyderabad have had a mixed start to their IPL 2026 campaign:

    • Matches Played: 3
    • Wins: 1 (vs KKR)
    • Losses: 2 (vs RCB and LSG)

The team, led by Ishan Kishan, will next face the Punjab Kings on April 11.

What This Means for IPL 2026

This controversy once again puts the spotlight on umpiring standards, rule interpretation, and fair play in IPL 2026. With the tournament progressing, consistent officiating will be crucial to maintaining the league’s credibility.
