The Pentagon dropped the image at 10:00 AM Eastern. It’s a high-res shot, crisp enough to count rivets, and it confirmed what analysts only suspected: Beijing has a winged ship in orbit that looks suspiciously like a clone of our X-37B. The release came inside the Defense Intelligence Agency’s annual threat assessment, a dry document that suddenly sparked a firestorm on social media. People are asking what it does there, up high. The honest answer is: we don’t fully know yet.

The Photo That Ended the Guessing Game

For months, the world has only had blurry, low-resolution glimpses from commercial satellites. Those images showed a shape, a silhouette, but not the engineering details that matter to intelligence officers. Then Vantor, formerly known as Maxar, pointed its cameras at the target during a chance orbital intersection. The resulting photo shows delta wings, a dark heat shield, and a rear-mounted service module with solar arrays glowing faintly in the sun. It is a picture of functional, if uninspiring, pragmatism.

The vehicle bears a strong resemblance to the US Space Force’s X-37B, down to the payload bay doors. It’s not a copy-paste job, though. There are subtle differences in the wing geometry and the way the nose section tapers. A technician in a hangar in Hainan probably spent years staring at declassified blueprints and closed the gap.

We’ve seen the outline. Now we see the machine. And that changes the tone of the conversation from speculative fiction to hard operational reality.

A Catch-and-Release Game in Low Earth Orbit

China has launched this thing four times since 2020, according to the DIA report. The current mission, which began in February, is still up there, circling the planet. That’s a long time to be out of sight. Compare that to our own X-37B, which has an eight-mission history with the longest flight lasting two and a half years.

The Chinese ship has maxed out at nine months so far. The numbers are moving quickly. It’s not static.

What’s more unsettling than the flight time is what it did while up there. Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist who catalogs almost every bit of spaceflight activity, analyzed the orbital tracking data. He found that the spaceplane released a sub-satellite in June. It caught it again in July using a robotic arm.

Then it did it all over again in August and September. Is that practice for future combat operations, or just a maintenance drill? The math doesn’t quite work out if it’s just for show. That’s a harder sell than it sounds.

    The Shadow of Directed-Energy Weapons

The same DIA report that released the photo also flagged a new and scary capability: lasers. Specifically, ground-based directed-energy weapons that can dazzle or destroy sensors on enemy satellites. The agency said China likely views these as “ideal counterspace systems.” It’s not science fiction anymore. We are talking about weapons that can hit faster than light and leave no debris.

That makes attribution difficult. It makes diplomacy harder. You can’t blow up a satellite and hide it as easily as you can a missile.

By the late 2020s, the report warns, China may field space-based directed energy systems. Right now, they are testing ground-based lasers with varying power levels. They have already demonstrated the ability to disrupt signals and degrade hardware. The U.S. has its own laser programs, but they are rarely public.

This creates an asymmetric advantage. And when you look at the cost of building a laser versus the cost of a kinetic missile, the economics flip on their head. Nobody in the Pentagon room looked convinced that we are ahead in this specific metric.

Why the Name Matters Less Than the Function

Western media loves to call it Shenlong, citing older reports from the 2000s about a robotic spaceplane program. But Chinese state media refuses to use that name. They call it the Chongfu Shiyong Shiyan Hangtian Qi, or CSSHQ for short. That translates to “reusable experimental spacecraft.” It’s a very boring name for a very un-boring vehicle.

The Secure World Foundation fact sheet notes this discrepancy clearly. Naming things is a way of claiming ownership, and Beijing isn’t claiming it. They are keeping it functional. They are keeping it hidden in plain sight.

The official designation is less important than the operational reality. This is a reusable asset. It lands on a runway. It gets refurbished.

It flies again. That is the endgame for all spaceplanes. It shifts the cost model of space operations from disposable to sustainable. You don’t build a new satellite every time you need eyes in orbit.

You send up the same one, over and over. It’s a game changer for logistics. It’s a headache for anyone trying to count assets. We used to track launches.

Now we have to track landings. It’s a different kind of surveillance.

What Happens Next in the Race

The next major milestone is likely the introduction of higher orbit operations. So far, the Chinese spaceplane has stayed in low Earth orbit, a few hundred miles up. But our X-37B once soared to 24,000 miles to test aerobraking. If Beijing does the same, the strategic implications shift dramatically.

You start reaching geosynchronous satellites. You start threatening comms networks. You start reaching economic chokepoints. The altitude is the barrier.

Breaking it is the goal. We should expect to see this capability tested within the next 5 years. Don’t hold your breath. It might be sooner.

The U.S. Space Force will likely respond with improved countermeasures, but the gap is closing. Commercial players like Vantor are now part of the intelligence loop, seeing things our military satellites sometimes miss. This blurs the line between national security and private enterprise.

A former engineer at the company told reporters that the cameras don’t lie. They just don’t have context. We have the image. We have the data.

But we don’t have the intent. That’s the hard part. The rest is just waiting for the next launch.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Chinese spaceplane an exact copy of the X-37B?

No, it is not an exact copy. While the overall design language is similar, there are distinct differences in the wing shape and thermal protection systems. The Chinese vehicle appears optimized for different operational profiles based on its launch history.

How did the Pentagon get the high-resolution image?

The image was captured by a commercial satellite owned by Vantor. The company provides reconnaissance services to the U.S. military and intelligence agencies. The Defense Intelligence Agency acquired the data and included it in their public threat assessment.

Can this spaceplane attack other satellites?

It is theoretically capable of deploying small satellites or performing servicing tasks. Recent tracking data suggests it has caught and released objects, which indicates a potential for on-orbit manipulation. Direct kinetic attack remains unproven but plausible given its maneuverability.

Why does China keep the mission details secret?

Secrecy is standard for military space programs to protect operational doctrine. Revealing the exact capabilities limits the enemy’s ability to prepare countermeasures. It also maintains technological surprise, which is a key advantage in any conflict.
