Donald Trump branded a Muslim Senate candidate a “jihadist” on Wednesday, a label that has sent shockwaves through political circles and reignited debates over the president’s rhetoric ahead of the November midterms.

The insult was aimed at Abdul El-Sayed, the progressive Democrat running for the U.S. Senate in Michigan. It was delivered not in a private meeting, but at a raucous rally in Sioux City, Iowa, where the president was stumping for his party’s local candidates. The timing is deliberate. With polls showing a tight race, Trump is using his global platform to smear opponents, betting that his presence will energize the GOP base enough to offset his own declining approval numbers.

    A Label with Heavy Consequences

“Jihadist” is not a casual slur. It carries the weight of global terrorism. When Trump shouted the word at the crowd, he was attempting to link El-Sayed to violent extremism, a tactic that has proven effective in past cycles but is increasingly polarizing. El-Sayed, who is an emergency physician and a prominent voice in the Democratic Party, had just spent the weekend addressing questions about his faith.

At a town hall in Caro, Michigan, an attendee asked El-Sayed to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood. El-Sayed complied, but he pushed back on the premise of the question. “You’re asking the question because implicitly you assume that I’ll have dual loyalties,” El-Sayed told the room. “You assume that somehow I wouldn’t disavow. Or that I’ll have some higher order, allegiance than to the Constitution.” The exchange highlights the tightrope candidates of faith walk. They must assert their patriotic credentials while rejecting the implication that their identity is a security threat.

Trump didn’t stop at El-Sayed. He swept in other Democrats, grouping them into a basket of “extremists.” James Talarico, running for Senate in Texas, and Ilhan Omar, the Minnesota congresswoman, were also named. By clustering these figures together, Trump is trying to create a narrative of a radical left that threatens American safety. It’s a broad brush, but it’s one his base recognizes.

    The Price of Asking Questions

The rally in Sioux City was supposed to be a standard campaign stop. Then it became a case study in press freedom under the current administration. Andrew Feinberg, the White House correspondent for The Independent, was banned from traveling with the president on Air Force One. Feinberg was scheduled to be the print pooler, a rotation confirmed days before.

On Tuesday, during an Oval Office event, Feinberg asked questions that Trump didn’t like. The president’s reaction was visceral. He called Feinberg a “sick person” and suggested there was something wrong with him. By Wednesday evening, the White House Press Office sent an anonymous email. It stated simply that Feinberg would not be the print pooler for the next trip. No reason was given. The implication, however, was clear.

” The anonymous email did not say why, but it was obvious that I was being punished for what happened on Tuesday,” Feinberg wrote. He noted that he isn’t there to be friendly with the president. “There will be an administration after this one. It may well be one with a Democratic president in the Oval Office once more. And I’ll be there, doing the exact same thing.”

This isn’t an isolated incident. It’s part of a pattern where access is traded for loyalty. Reporters who ask hard questions find themselves excluded from the inner circle. The message to the rest of the press corps is stark: compliance is the price of entry.

    Racing Against the Polls

Trump’s campaign in Iowa is a defensive play. The state is a Republican stronghold, having voted for the president in 2016, 2020, and 2024. Yet, the midterm races are far from secured. A recent Marist Poll shows Democrat Josh Turek leading Republican Ashley Hinson in the Senate race, 48 to 45 percent. In the governor’s race, Democrat Rob Sand holds a 52 to 45 percent lead over Republican Zach Lahn.

These numbers are a reality check for the GOP. They aren’t winning by default. Trump is trying to change the dynamic by injecting his own name into the equation. He has told supporters to vote for Republicans as if he were on the ballot. He’s even dangled the carrot of $5,000 checks, a promise critics have dismissed as a bribe. It’s a high-stakes gamble. If the GOP loses Congress, Trump’s legislative agenda will stall. If they win, he keeps his power base intact.

    The Approval Problem

There’s a catch, though. Trump’s personal brand is taking a hit. A new ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll shows his approval rating at a record low of 33 percent. The reasons are multifaceted: an unpopular conflict in Iran, stubborn inflation, and an immigration crackdown that many Americans view as too aggressive.

At a rally in North Carolina earlier in the week, Trump tried to deflect attention from his own image issues by attacking his hecklers. He compared them to rioters in Paris, a comparison that felt forced to many observers. The protests in France are about cost of living and school conditions, not political dissent. By drawing that parallel, Trump is trying to frame domestic dissent as violence. It’s a narrative that resonates with some, but it also alienates moderates who are already on the fence.

The next few weeks will be critical. The midterm elections are the real test. Trump can shout “jihadist” all day, but he can’t change the fact that voters are looking at their wallets and their news feeds. The decision they make in November will determine the balance of power in Washington for the next two years.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Trump call Abdul El-Sayed a jihadist?

Trump used the term to attack El-Sayed’s character and political alignment during a campaign rally. El-Sayed is a Muslim candidate, and Trump’s rhetoric often targets opponents based on their identity or perceived loyalties. El-Sayed has publicly disavowed the Muslim Brotherhood but rejected the premise of being asked to do so in the first place.

Will Trump’s ban on Andrew Feinberg affect other reporters?

It’s a warning shot. The White House Press Office has a history of managing pool access. By banning a reporter for asking questions, the administration is signaling that access is conditional. Other reporters may hesitate to ask tough questions, knowing the potential cost. This could impact the transparency of the administration’s actions.
