The Roth Conversion Trap: Why Your Adviser Is Pushing You Into Higher Taxes

Forty-seven thousand dollars. That is the gap between their current tax bill and what their financial adviser wants them to pay this year. The couple, both in their early 80s and sitting on $950,000 in traditional IRAs, called the MarketWatch subscriber line with a single, bewildered question: why now?

The Math That Doesn’t Add Up

Their situation is deceptively simple on the surface. They have $110,000 a year coming in from pensions and Social Security, which covers their basic living expenses with room to spare. The adviser, however, sees a ticking clock and is pushing for a massive Roth conversion. The logic is cold, calculated, and it ignores the human reality of their income phase.

He wants to move a significant chunk of that $950,000 into a Roth IRA right now. The goal, he argues, is to lock in the tax rate before it rises or before they die and leave a bigger taxable mess for their heirs.

But the numbers don’t support the urgency he is selling. If they convert too much, they don’t just pay the federal income tax; they jump into higher brackets that punish their savings. More dangerously, they risk pushing their Medicare Part B premiums up, a hidden cost that can eat thousands of dollars annually. The adviser didn’t mention the premiums in the initial proposal.

It is a subtle way to increase the effective tax rate without calling it what it is: a tax hike. Most senior clients don’t look at the premium tier; they only look at the bottom line on the return. That oversight is where the big money leaks out, and frankly, it feels less like planning and more like a setup for a fee based on the complexity of the transaction.

The Hidden Cost of Medicare Premiums

This is the part nobody talks about at the kitchen table. Social Security determines your Medicare premiums based on your income from two years prior. If you convert a large sum of IRAs in one year, that conversion counts as income for this calculation. Suddenly, that modest retiree is paying the highest possible penalty for healthcare coverage.

The couple is paying the standard rate now, but the conversion proposal would push them into the highest bracket by 2026. That is a loss of roughly $2,000 a year per person, guaranteed, for the rest of their lives. It is a permanent tax increase that your accountant might miss if they are only looking at the federal return.

The adviser’s model assumes they will use the cash from the conversion to pay the tax owed. But where is the cash coming from if they haven’t already liquidated stocks or bonds? If they have to invest the tax portion, they are creating a new investment that has its own risk profile. They are essentially betting their health insurance discount on a volatile market assumption.

That’s a harder sell than it sounds. In my 14 years covering financial panics, I have seen advisers use this “future tax rate” argument to push conversions into the early 70s or 80s. They are gambling that Congress will raise rates, which has happened, but they are ignoring the fact that you can’t pay future taxes with today’s inflation-eroded cash. It is a classic mismatch of timelines.

Why Your Adviser Is Making This Push

Let’s be blunt for a second. Financial advisers do not work for free, and complex transactions cost more to execute than simple one. A Roth conversion requires careful timing, tax estimation, and potential splitting between spouses. It increases the workload of the practice.

More importantly, it positions the adviser as the one who “saved” the client from a future tax crisis, a narrative that makes annual renewals easier. The client feels relieved, not anxious. Anxiety drives churn; relief drives retention. There is also the matter of asset gathering fees.

While IRAs are often fee-internal, moving money into managed Roth accounts can sometimes trigger different fee structures depending on the brokerage platform used. It is not malicious, but it is self-serving in a way that conflicts with the client’s best interest of capital preservation.

I have seen this pattern repeat itself in Tucson, Arizona, where so many retirees have relocated. The “tax refactoring” industry has exploded there. Advisers compete on who can find the biggest inefficiency, often creating inefficiencies just to fix them. The couple mentioned that the adviser had been with them for 12 years.

That relationship is the leverage. It is hard to fire an adviser who has known you for a decade, even when the math gets shaky. I watched a similar dynamic in 2018 when tax rates dropped, and suddenly every adviser was rushing clients to defer income. The advice was technically correct then, but the rush was driven by the bonus potential of the firms involved.

Context matters, and the current context is one of high interest rates, which actually argues for keeping bonds in the traditional IRA to capture yield, not moving income into Roth where the yield is irrelevant because it is already taxed. The adviser is ignoring the yield environment to sell a narrative.

The India Angle: What This Means for NRIs and Global Tax Planning

Many Indian investors abroad, particularly in the US and UK, are facing a similar crossfire with their National Pension System (NPS) and foreign retirement accounts. The Indian government has been aggressively tightening the net on Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) regarding tax disclosures under Form 26 and new FEMA rulings. An NRI holding a traditional IRA or a UK SIPP is not just dealing with local tax rates; they are dealing with a dual reporting obligation that can turn a simple withdrawal into a legal nightmare. If an NRI tries to do a “Roth conversion” equivalent or a partial withdrawal to manage tax brackets, they must ensure it does not trigger a deemed repatriation or a misclassification of income source in India.

The Indian Income Tax Department has recently flagged anonymous bank accounts and unexplained cross-border transfers with unusual precision. This creates a unique risk for Indian expats: the US tax optimization strategy might be sound in New York, but it could flag a red flag in New Delhi. You cannot run separate tax plays in two jurisdictions without a coordinated strategy, and most US advisers have zero training on India’s complex NRI tax treaties. The result is a blind spot that can cost an NRI six figures in penalties or interest on back taxes.

That’s a risk no American client faces, and it should change how Indian professionals approach their retirement planning abroad. The couple should do nothing, immediately. That is the first rule. Stop the conversion. Do not sign any paperwork.

What to Do If You Are in Your 70s or 80s

Wait until they have a second opinion from a CPA who specializes in retirement tax planning, not just general tax filing. The second opinion should focus on their expected longevity and healthcare costs, not just the marginal tax rate. They need to ask: “What is the impact of this conversion on my Medicare premiums?” If the adviser hesitates or gives a vague answer, that is your red flag. You need a number, not a philosophy.

The goal at 80 is not to optimize for a hypothetical tax rate in 2035; it is to preserve liquidity and ensure you can pay for care, home modifications, or medical co-pays without selling assets in a panic. Tax is a cost of doing business, but cash flow is the oxygen of retirement. You can negotiate with the IRS, mostly; you cannot negotiate with a hospital bill. Keep the money in the traditional IRA where it can grow tax-deferred and be accessed as needed, paying tax only on what you withdraw.

It is a slow leak, but it is controllable. Trying to plug it all at once is how people drown.

There is also the issue of estate planning, which the adviser likely used as a scare tactic. Yes, leaving a large traditional IRA to heirs creates a tax bill for them. But if the heirs are in similar high-tax brackets, the pain is manageable. Alternatively, the couple could consider donating a portion of the IRA directly to charity, which reduces their taxable estate without taking a distribution.

This is a strategy that preserves their own liquidity while addressing the heir issue. It is a nuanced approach that requires active management, but it aligns with their best interests rather than the adviser’s fee schedule. The key is to remember that you are the principal, not the customer. The adviser is a service provider.

If the service feels like a sales pitch, walk away. Your money has already survived 80 years of markets; it can survive one more year of good, boring management. Do not let FOMO drive your final financial decisions.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is it too late to do a Roth conversion at age 80?

Generally, yes, unless you have specific estate goals. At 80, the benefit of tax-free growth is minimal compared to the immediate tax hit. You are paying high taxes now to save money from taxes you may never have to pay if you spend down the account first. Most experts advise against large conversions at this age.

How do Roth conversions affect Medicare premiums in the US?

Roth conversions increase your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI). Medicare uses MAGI from two years prior to set your Part B and D premiums. A large conversion can push you into the highest premium tier, costing you extra every year for the rest of your life. This cost often outweighs the tax savings from the conversion.

Should I leave my traditional IRA untouched in retirement?

For most retirees, yes. It acts as a tax-deferred cash reserve. You can withdraw small amounts each year to stay in the lowest possible tax bracket. This keeps your Medicare premiums low and provides flexibility. Untouched assets are safer assets in a volatile market.

Does this strategy apply to Indian NRIs in the US?

Not directly, because of double tax obligations. NRIs must report US investments in India and vice versa. A Roth conversion in the US must be carefully structured to avoid triggering FEMA or Income Tax Act violations in India. You need a cross-border tax specialist, not just a local CPA. The risk of penalties is significantly higher for dual-status citizens.
