Ajay Devgn has made plenty of sequels. Some of them needed to exist. Drishyam 2, which became one of the most-watched Hindi films of 2022, absolutely needed to exist — and rewarded the faith audiences put in it.
Now Drishyam 3 is confirmed, and the question everyone is asking is: where does Vijay Salgaonkar go from here?
What We Know About the Plot
Details have been kept deliberately tight, but what’s been confirmed is that Vijay — who spent two films constructing and defending an increasingly elaborate alibi — now faces a threat that comes from an unexpected direction. The official logline hints at “the truth finding a way out,” which suggests the writers are exploring what happens when the perfect cover story starts developing cracks from within.
Producer Kumar Mangat has indicated the third film will pick up several years after Drishyam 2 left off. Vijay and his family have settled into a new version of normalcy — but that normalcy is about to be disrupted.
The Cast
Ajay Devgn returns as Vijay Salgaonkar. Shriya Saran is back as his wife Nandini. Ishita Dutta and Mrunal Jadhav reprise their roles as the daughters.
Tabu, who played the relentless Inspector General Meera Deshmukh in the first two films, is confirmed to return — which immediately raises the stakes. Meera Deshmukh has never fully let go of her suspicion about what really happened. Bringing her back suggests the central tension of the franchise — Vijay versus Meera — is far from resolved.
There are also reports of one significant new addition to the cast, though the production team hasn’t confirmed names yet.
The Director
Anil Mathur, who directed Drishyam 2 after Nishikant Kamat helmed the original, is back for the third installment. This continuity matters — the pacing and tone of Drishyam 2 were calibrated very precisely, and having the same director ensures that won’t be recalibrated from scratch.
Release Date
An official date hasn’t been announced, but industry sources suggest a 2026 festive window — either Diwali or Christmas — is being targeted. Given that both previous films performed best during major holiday periods, this tracks.
What to Expect
The Drishyam formula works because it’s fundamentally about the tension between a man who loves his family fiercely enough to do terrible things, and a system trying to uncover what he did. That tension doesn’t expire. The question is whether the writers can find a genuinely new angle rather than just repeating the same beats in a new setting.
Based on what little has been shared, it sounds like they’ve found one. The real test will be whether the screenplay delivers on the setup — and whether Ajay Devgn and Tabu can recreate the electric dynamic that made the second film work so well.
Expectations are high. That’s both the advantage and the burden of making a third film in a franchise where the previous two exceeded expectations.
