Some matches stay with you. Not because of the result — though a 4-1 scoreline is hard to forget — but because of the way they unfold. Spain’s UEFA Nations League quarterfinal against Croatia on September 29, 2026 was exactly that kind of game. It had drama, controversy, a moment of sheer brilliance from Alvaro Morata, and a Croatian collapse that their fans will be picking apart for months.

Spain came in as heavy favourites, of course. They’ve been the dominant force in European football since their Nations League run began, and Croatia — despite their historical pedigree — have been rebuilding since Luka Modric stepped back from the national setup. But football doesn’t care about form books, and when Andrej Kramaric put Croatia ahead in the 18th minute with a low drive that clipped the post and went in off the keeper’s hand, the Estadio Mestalla went very quiet indeed.

    Morata’s Hat-Trick Moment

Alvaro Morata has spent much of his career being underestimated. It is a strange position for a man who has scored over 200 career goals, but Spanish fans have always held him to an almost impossibly high standard. After his equaliser in the 31st minute — a calm header from a Pedri cross that the keeper should have done better with — you could feel the crowd warming to him. By the time he completed his hat-trick with a 78th-minute penalty, the stadium was shaking.

The second goal was the one that changed the match. Sixty-fourth minute. Gavi found Morata with a first-time ball over the top, and the striker controlled it on his chest, let it bounce once, and lashed it into the far corner from twenty-two yards. It was the kind of goal you see in highlight reels for years. The Croatian defenders stood watching, seemingly as surprised as everyone else.

“I’ve been working on that kind of finish in training every day,” Morata said afterwards, grinning in a way that suggested he knew exactly how good it was. “When Gavi plays that ball, you have to be ready. The touch, the finish — sometimes it just clicks.” It was the most relaxed he’s sounded in a post-match interview in years.

    Spain’s Tactical Dominance

Luis de la Fuente set his team up in a 4-3-3 that morphed into a 4-2-3-1 when Spain had the ball. The key was Pedri operating just behind Morata, constantly finding pockets of space between Croatia’s midfield and defence. Modric’s successor, Luka Sucic, had a decent game individually but simply couldn’t deal with the sheer number of runners Spain were throwing at Croatia’s back line.

Gavi, operating from the left, was outstanding. His pressing was relentless — he won the ball back eight times in the first half alone, according to the official UEFA stats — and his delivery from wide areas created four clear chances. It was the kind of complete midfield performance that reminded you exactly why Barcelona paid what they paid for him.

Dani Carvajal, now 34 but seemingly defying every rule about ageing footballers, was superb at right back. His overlapping run in the 71st minute led to the penalty that Morata converted. The Croatian winger, who had been giving him problems all evening, was simply run into the ground by a player who has won almost everything there is to win in club football.

    Croatia’s Defensive Collapse

For Croatia, the post-mortem will be painful. They were genuinely in this game until the 64th minute. One moment of individual brilliance — Morata’s second goal — and their entire defensive structure seemed to crumble. The 4-1 scoreline flatters Spain slightly; it could have been 4-2, and Croatia should have had a second goal themselves when Ivan Perisic hit the crossbar in the 80th minute with Unai Simon beaten.

Croatian manager Zlatko Dalic was understandably frustrated. “We played well for 63 minutes,” he said, and he wasn’t wrong. “Then one goal changed everything. These things happen in football, but losing 4-1 hurts.” There was no bitterness in his voice, just the weary acceptance of a manager who knows his team gave everything they had.

What’s Next: Spain in the Semi-Finals

Spain will face the winners of France vs Germany in the semi-finals, scheduled for November 14, 2026. If Morata continues in this form — three goals in one match, nine in the Nations League campaign — they will be extremely difficult to stop. The question is whether Pedri and Gavi can stay fit through the campaign, because when both are playing at this level, Spain are arguably the best team in the world.

For Indian football fans watching the UEFA Nations League, this is the kind of match that reminds you why European football remains the gold standard. Spain’s movement, their pressing, their technical quality — it was a masterclass. And Morata, the man they used to boo, took his moment with both hands.
