The row over the Election Commission, centered around Gyanesh Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner, is not limited to the political realm anymore but has spilled into the domain of meme warfare. The slogan “Gyanesh, it’s done bro” started making rounds following the announcement of a Delhi press meet by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The party had used this line while declaring the meet, which would be centered around the working of the Election Commission.

The online response was preceded by a news report in The Indian Express that claimed two Election Commissioners — Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi — have filed at least 14 objections against the decision/orders of the poll panel in ten months. Some of these included issues relating to electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

However, the Election Commission denied the allegation that the differences amounted to a rift within the commission and stated that it was only normal for divergent views and comments to exist.

What is the Election Commission row about?

Election Commission functioning is the central point around which the recent controversy revolves.

In its report dated September 23, 2026, as reported in The Indian Express investigation, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi lodged several objections related to the functioning of the electoral rolls, inclusion/deletion of voters from the rolls, voter registration process, and some features of SIR.

One of the problems mentioned in the report was related to the appeals regarding retention of names of the voters by the judicial officers in the Bengal SIR process. According to reports, Sandhu raised the question about the person who authorized the appeal and made the petition on behalf of the Election Commission.

The recent report has led to a more political controversy in which the functioning of the poll panel and CEC Gyanesh Kumar was questioned by opposition leaders. These are allegations and political demands and should not be taken as factual findings against the Election Commission and Gyanesh Kumar.

    Who is Gyanesh Kumar?

Gyanesh Kumar is the Chief Election Commissioner of India. The Election Commission’s official website states that he took charge as the country’s 26th Chief Election Commissioner on February 19, 2025.

The current three-member Election Commission consists of:

    • Gyanesh Kumar — Chief Election Commissioner
    • Sukhbir Singh Sandhu — Election Commissioner
    • Vivek Joshi — Election Commissioner

The Election Commission’s official officers directory lists all three officials in these positions.

The Election Commission is a constitutional authority responsible for administering elections to the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, state legislative assemblies and the offices of the President and Vice President of India.

Why did “Gyanesh, it’s done bro” become a meme?

The phrase gained attention after CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announced that the organisation would hold a press conference in Delhi on the Election Commission controversy.

    Dipke posted on X:

“Election Commission Thik Karo! Important PC tomorrow in Delhi. Gyanesh, it’s done bro.”

“Gyanesh, it’s done bro,” a spokesperson for CJP, Saurav Das, was heard saying in a video released during the organization’s explanation of their choice to focus on voting rights and how the poll panel functioned.

This colloquial and concise language became a good fit for meme formats very soon. This phrase, not staying within the realms of formal political discourse, was put into images.

A collection of memes and cartoons inspired by the incident involving the Election Commission was published by The Telegraph India. For instance, there were memes of three commissioners sitting in an Election Commission-marked autorickshaw and one of Rahul Gandhi with the aforementioned quote.

What are the Election Commission memes showing?

The Election Commission memes circulating online generally focus on three themes:

    1. The reported 14 objections

The number 14 has become one of the most commonly referenced elements in social-media commentary because of the Indian Express report about objections recorded by Sandhu and Joshi over a 10-month period.

Some memes portray the objections as documents, messages or complaints piling up around the Commission.

    2. The three-member Commission

The reported differences have also generated memes about the three-member structure of the Election Commission.

Cartoons have used the relationship between Gyanesh Kumar, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi as a visual metaphor for the reported disagreements.

    3. “It’s Done Bro”

The informal phrase has become the most recognisable meme hook connected with the controversy.

Its popularity illustrates how complicated political and institutional stories can be simplified into short, shareable social-media formats.

However, a meme is commentary or satire, not evidence. The underlying claims should be checked against the original reporting and official statements.

What has the Election Commission said?

The Election Commission has disputed the suggestion that the reported differences demonstrate a serious internal breakdown.

According to the Commission’s position reported by multiple outlets, different views and observations are a normal part of deliberations within a multi-member constitutional body. It has maintained that decisions, including those concerning SIR, were taken unanimously with the approval of all three commissioners.

This distinction is important when discussing the Gyanesh Kumar controversy. A reported objection during an internal deliberation does not automatically mean that the final decision of the Commission was taken without the participation or approval of other commissioners.

The available reporting therefore contains two distinct elements: the Indian Express account of recorded objections and the Election Commission’s response that the final decisions were unanimous.

Why is SIR central to the controversy?

There have been several debates on the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the Election Commission.

According to an article in The Indian Express, there have been several big changes in electoral rolls through the process of SIR, and several issues in this regard have been raised internally.

The voter-services portal of Election Commission now offers relevant information on SIR-2026 and voter services related to the same.

Since voter lists are crucial for the registration of voters, any development relating to SIR of electoral rolls may create much stir.

Social media turns institutional controversy into viral content

From the most recent episode, we can see just how fast an institutional fight can turn into a social media trend.

“Gyanesh, it’s done bro” is a short and catchy phrase that lends itself perfectly to meme templates and reaction memes.

While the trend itself does not validate any of the claims made about the Election Commission, it represents the public and political response to the scandal.

This nuance is particularly critical for people who have first encountered this story on Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook.

    What happens next?

These issues are likely to form the core of this controversy: the objections raised by the two Election Commissioners, the explanation by the Election Commission about its deliberative process, and the political debate about the SIR exercise.

The CJP has scheduled a press conference in Delhi after the controversy, while the opposition political parties have continued to criticize the Election Commission. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has maintained that their decisions were taken unanimously.

While reading this controversy, it is helpful to separate facts from political accusations, opinions, and memes.

    Conclusion

The row between Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission has very quickly turned into a major issue on social media platforms, with “Gyanesh, it is done bro” becoming one of the most well-known phrases related to the latest controversy.

The meme campaign followed allegations of several complaints raised by Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, members of the Election Commission, regarding decisions made concerning electoral rolls and SIR. The Election Commission has denied that complaints are indicative of a breakdown and argued that different opinions are just part of institutional deliberations and that the final decision was unanimous.

However, as the discussion around the political issue progresses, memes are expected to continue to evolve. However, it is important for the readers to differentiate between memes and political statements and news reports.
