CBS News reported that the perpetrator aimed to assault officials associated with Donald Trump who were attending the dinner event at the White House.
The individual apprehended in the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner has been named as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old resident of Torrance, California, accused of firing at a Secret Service agent while trying to trespass security at the Washington Hilton.
Authorities stated that Allen, wielding a shotgun, was taken into custody post-incident outside the ballroom where US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and senior cabinet members were gathered.
Recent insights reveal Allen is an alumnus of the California Institute of Technology, with social media and professional profiles showing he worked as a part-time educator and an independent videogame developer.
A LinkedIn account under his name depicts him as a “mechanical engineer and computer scientist by education, independent game developer by practice, teacher by nature.”
The profile states he completed a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Caltech in 2017 and a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2025. Caltech has verified that a person with that name graduated in 2017.
PART-TIME TUTOR, NAMED ‘TEACHER OF THE MONTH’
Allen is thought to have served as a part-time tutor with C2 Education, a private test-preparation service, where he was recognized as “Teacher of the Month” in December 2024, according to Facebook posts associated with him.
His professional background also includes working as a self-employed game developer and as a mechanical engineer at IJK Controls in South Pasadena, as well as a teaching assistant at Caltech.
The profile further highlights his participation in a robotics competition that his team secured victory in at Caltech in 2016, listing “Science and Technology” among his interests.
STAYED AT WASHINGTON HOTEL, MOTIVE UNCERTAIN
Investigators suspect that Allen was lodging at the Washington Hilton hotel, the venue for the annual dinner, according to the District of Columbia police chief. However, authorities have mentioned that it is premature to identify a distinct motive for the assault.
Previous reports suggested that the suspect had expressed intentions of targeting officials attending the event, but investigators are still determining intent. Officials indicated that the suspect appears to have acted independently, with both law enforcement and Trump labeling him as a “lone wolf.”
ALLEN ARMED WITH VARIOUS WEAPONS
Authorities indicated that Allen was equipped with multiple firearms, including a shotgun, a handgun, and various knives.
District of Columbia interim police chief Jeffery Carroll remarked that investigators believe Allen acted solo, with no evidence of a broader conspiracy. US President Donald Trump also characterized the suspect as a ‘lone wolf.’
Carroll continued that the incident “does not appear to pose any sort of risk to the public currently.”
Meanwhile, US Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated the suspect faces preliminary charges associated with firearm usage and assaulting a federal officer, with more charges anticipated as the investigation unfolds.
She added that Allen is anticipated to be arraigned in federal court as authorities continue to piece together the events.
SUSPECT CONTRIBUTED TO KAMALA HARRIS, REPORTS LAURA LOOMER
The shooting at the White House event sparked a clash between Republicans and Democrats, with far-right activist Laura Loomer asserting that the assailant contributed to Kamala Harris’s 2024 Presidential campaign.
“Cole Tomas Allen donated to @KamalaHarris in 2024! Naturally, he did. The Democrat Party embodies the culture of assassination,” Loomer posted from her X account.
She also noted that the assailant possesses a master’s degree in Computer Science and is ‘a brown/black-skinned Democrat from California’, who is employed as a teacher.
No official validation of these assertions has been made, and law enforcement agencies have yet to establish any political motivations behind the attack.
