West Bengal SIR Update: Final Supplementary Voter List to Be Released Tonight

The Election Commission of India (EC) has informed the Supreme Court of India that the final supplementary list of voters under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal will be released tonight. This crucial update will determine the fate of nearly 8 lakh voters whose applications are still under review.

8 Lakh Voters Await Final Decision

According to EC officials, approximately 8 lakh voter applications are still pending adjudication. These cases are part of a larger verification drive initiated after discrepancies were found in the electoral rolls.

Voters whose names do not appear in this final supplementary list will have no immediate administrative remedy and will need to approach tribunals for resolution. However, uncertainty remains regarding when these tribunals will become operational.

Over 52 Lakh Cases Already Resolved

The EC has already made significant progress in the verification process. After releasing the eighth supplementary list on April 3, officials confirmed that around 52 lakh cases had been resolved.

Initially, more than 60 lakh voter names were under scrutiny following the publication of the draft electoral rolls. The verification process is being conducted by judicial officers in compliance with directions from the Supreme Court.

    Elections Timeline Adds Urgency

The timing of this exercise is critical, as the West Bengal elections are fast approaching:

    • First phase of voting: April 23
    • Last date for nominations (Phase 1): April 6
    • Counting day: May 4

The electoral rolls must be finalized and frozen before the nomination process concludes, making this supplementary list a decisive step in ensuring a fair election.

    Security Concerns During Verification Process

The verification drive has also raised security concerns. A recent incident in Malda’s Kaliachak, where judicial officers were reportedly gheraoed, has prompted authorities to take additional precautions.

Officials have assured that enhanced security measures are being implemented to protect judicial officers involved in voter verification.

    What This Means for Voters

For many voters, this final list will determine their eligibility to participate in the upcoming elections. Those excluded will face legal hurdles and potential delays in regaining their voting rights.

With the deadline approaching, all eyes are now on the Election Commission’s final announcement tonight.
